Newborn Session Preparation
Session Details
WHEN:
- Ideally newborns should be photographed within the first two weeks of birth. During this time period they are still very flexible, sleepy and easy to pose. All those tiny details change so quickly, so it’s important to capture those new beginnings as quickly as we can. Of course we can work with babies of any age and get beautiful images, so feel welcome to book a session with your baby no matter what age he/she is. I love working with babies of all ages:)
WHERE
- Your home is the ideal environment for your baby’s first session. I’ve had three kids of my own, and I remember how exhausting a new baby can be! When we shoot your session in the comfort of our home it gives me access to all kinds of props and places to photograph your baby that are personal and memorable, and it gives you a much needed break from the busyness of a new baby. The utmost care and attention will always be given to keep your baby safe and happy, so you can sit back and relax while I create magical images of your beautiful new addition to the family. PS. I know how tiring new babies are, I’m not there to check on your house keeping skills, so don’t worry if it’s a mess! Mine usually is too! LOL:)
WHAT TO WEAR
- Newborn sessions typically are done without clothing or diapers (hiding baby’s private parts of course:) I love using favorite blankets, toys, and things that are special to mom and dad, things that are hobbies, lifestyle or obsession ~ such as cowboy hats, helmets, saddles, family pets, large baskets, bowls, books, use your imagination!! What do you love??
- If the parents are very uncomfortable with the look of naked babies, I can use baby clothes as well, but prefer to have as much of the baby showing as possible. There is just something about that creamy skin and softness of a tiny new person that is so precious. Please be assured that all of my images are very tasteful and natural, and in no way offensive or lewd. We will discuss your comfort levels in depth during your consultation.
WHO
- I love using parents arms and hands in the images to cradle the baby. There are many creative ways to incorporate parents into the images. If you are uncomfortable in front of the camera we can work around that and still create works of art that you can be a part of and proud of for years to come:) If you don’t mind having your picture taken, be prepared to jump in!!!
- If you have older children siblings also make a great addition to newborn pictures, and it’s important to capture those first tender moments between your children:)
- Do you have a gentle and loving family pet that you would like to capture with your precious wee one? I love photographing babies with dogs, cats or other small and harmless pets. Please be aware that I will not photograph babies with snakes, rats, spiders or other “creepy” pets that could pose a health hazard to your newborn infant.
*Important Information*
When you are preparing for your newborn session there are some things to keep in mind that will make your session go smoother and get better results:)
- About 2 hours before the session turn your heat up so that it is somewhere between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius. A warm baby is a happy, sleepy & content baby and it makes the session go much more smoothly.
- Dress your baby in loose clothing. Avoid elastic cuffs, tight socks, and make sure the diaper is not cinched tight creating lines in baby’s skin. We want to avoid creases and lines created by clothing:)
- Please try to ensure baby has had enough to eat prior to the session. I do allow extra time during the session for feedings if needed, so if your baby is not on a schedule don’t stress out about it:) If your baby is on a schedule, please try to book around it so that baby has a full tummy.
- Please do not have any company while we are in session.
- Parents be prepared to jump in and get photographed with your baby. I love using hands and arms in my images, so make sure your nails are clean and groomed. If you aren’t camera shy I would love to incorporate parents into the session as well, so men make sure your facial hair is groomed / clean shaven and women make yourself feel pretty! *Note: women please avoid make up with sparkles
- Siblings are welcome to be a part of the session as well. Make sure your child is prepared to be photographed if you would like to include them in the session.
- Pets are welcome to be a part of the session so long as they are not vicious, dangerous, poisonous or pose any type of hazard to the baby or the photographer. Please ensure your pet is clean, dry and groomed for the session.
- Please do not have any other appointments scheduled for the day of your photo shoot. Sessions can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours, and it will be much less stressful for you if you can just relax and enjoy the process without worrying about having to be somewhere else.
- No cameras allowed (except mine of course:). After all. . . . you have hired me to photograph your child.
