Hey everyone:)
Well it has been a couple of months of amazing business!! I have been completely blown away by the response to the new studio opening. Even though I don’t have a lot of furniture and stuff in here yet I am seeing real favor in the business that has been coming my way. I couldn’t do it without fabulous clients that are excited to invest in custom artwork!
Some exciting changes are coming in the next few months. I will be making some changes to the website soon, updating to a new format and plan to be blogging more regularly! I would like to be blogging currant images, but also maybe start some educational type entries to help you all learn how to shoot beautiful images with impact at home! I would love to hear ideas from everyone about what kind of information or blog entries interest you, so please email me at saltboxstudio@natanisdavidsen.com with all your ideas!
I have a lot of images from this summer and fall that I would love to share, but I have about fifty folders with order sitting on my desk so I really should get back to work:) So for now, here’s just one. Feel welcome to share the link and comment below!! Thanks!

When I was invited to photograph the youth of the Flying Dust First Nations I had never heard of Dreams in Motion! Amazing and accomplished duo James Jones (2nd place winner of “So You Think You Can Dance Canada 2009) and Linsay Willier (2nd place winner of “Canada’s Next Top Model 2009) have combined their natural talents and vibrant personalities to teach our youth about the power of pursuing your dreams and living a healthy lifestyle. I have to say, what a wonderful and important issue to dedicate your life’s work to! Investing in our youth is never a wasted effort!
I didn’t get to sit in on the sessions, but heard it was a fantastic time for all! I was so impressed with the impact it seemed to have had in a very short time. All of the young people I had the privilege of working with were like seasoned pros! I enjoyed a few moments with James and Linsay and captured a few fun shots for them and learned a few techniques that professional models use when working. No wonder these kids all moved like they were on the runway! Well done James & Linsay!!
Check out some of the images I captured during our portrait sessions!

Ok, technically she is a woman. . . . . but I digress. . . . .Who wouldn’t want to fly??
My friend Clarissa was there when I got the call. . . . . a skydiving team was coming to Meadow Lake and jumping for four days! I was so excited to hear about it we went straight to the local Fas Gas to find out the details. Alas. . . . . the cost was too high for me with plans for Disneyland next February, so she was on her own. She was so excited that she would have an opportunity to prove to herself that her fear of heights could not master her! YAY!
So the big day came, and she went to the airport. I got busy with my day and completely forgot. I was heartbroken when her status popped up and it appeared I had missed it all! I commented my disappointment and a couple of minutes later the phone rang. She had not gone up yet! They were running behind. YAY! So Ky and I jumped into the van and headed out to the airport. It was a little heartbreaking to not get to jump on that plane, but I reminded myself of all the fun we will have available at Disney in a few months, and lived vicariously through my friend. She was fabulous. Full of smiles and laughter, I’m so happy I had the opportunity to capture my perspective from the ground to share with her!
Love you Hollywood!!

Well, it’s been a while since I posted and with good reason! I just finished a 44 page business proposal for an 18 month project that will be a historic body of work! I am currently waiting to hear back from the sponsors I have sent the proposal to and I will keep you posted as to the progress of things!
Last week I had the privilege of spending one whole week with my husband and some friends at Gordon Lake by Pinehouse, Sk. We enjoyed 6 days of fishing, visiting and quality time together! The kids stayed home with Gramma and Grampa and had some fun times with their cousins.
On our holiday we saw some beautiful Saskatchewan waterfalls and rapids, we also saw Pelicans, Eagles and Bears (Oh MY! LOL:) We were out on the lake every single day and I am more tanned now than I have been in my life. It was great to spend time with Shawn without any other responsibilities and we had so much fun with the Couplands and the Schmitkes! Hopefully next year we will see more couples make it to what has become an annual tradition amongst some of our friends, cause it was a blast and we enjoyed every moment!!
So look on to see some of the amazing sights we experienced while at Gordon Lake!

This was our first view of the lake, from the boat launch. This is the biggest lake I can remember ever being on! It went on and on for miles and miles and it had the most beautiful bays and coves with huge rocks and moss on the banks.

Carol waiting on her husband . . . . you can see the boat on the far right almost out of the picture.

Caught my first Lake trout! These are such BEAUTIFUL fish! Their skin is smooth and soft, not scaley and nasty like the pike around home. Trout is also yummy:) We enjoyed it at least 4 out of 6 nights we were there!

This trout had 2 minnows in its mouth when I pulled it in! It was feeding when it went after my hook. I wasn't using minnows but ended up with two large ones haha.

There are large rocks jutting out all over Gordon Lake, you have to be careful that you know where they are so you don't wreck your boat on them. When we first saw this rock it looked like a HUGE pelican sitting on it from the distance. Turns out it was 2 pelicans hanging out together. The one flew off before I had a chance to catpure it, but you will see the shy one a few frames down.

Our boat made a loud noise when the bottom scraped the shallows by this rock and I managed to capture the take off and flight which I thought was amazing!

Can you see Tyler and Deb's boat?? It's tiny......I'll give you a hint.....look to the right hand side of the water closer to the top:)

Sandy Lake. We heard the Pickrel fishing was amazing. The water was like glass.....so beautiful! Fish were jumping all around us the whole afternoon! We didn't catch much here though, but it was a beautiful day on the lake!

This guy was bothering us at the campsites. It wasn't afraid of people at all, we suspect some foolish person was feeding it. The DNR came out and trapped it so it could be relocated away from people. When I stepped up to take this picture it lunged at the bars and huffed REALLY loudly it's displeasure at the "paw-pa-ratzi" photographing it. HAHA! Glad it was behind bars is all I can say!

Can you see the sparkels? They were EVERYWHERE. Tiny gold sparkles and flakes of fools gold everywhere! It was so pretty I brought home a small vial to show the kids:)

Shawn climbed down to a rock above the falls to try his luck fishing. I overshot his spot and ended up above him, perfect place to photograph him from! The climb down to him was tooooo steep though, so I hiked back to the main area. I didn't really want to fall with 15 pounds of camera gear on my back!

Deb was the fisher-person of the day. She caught two pike and filleted them right there on the rocks. She was in her element! I would risk getting stranded with her anyday! We would never go hungry LOL:)

Shawn & I. So glad I had Deb take these for us! They are the only pictures we have together from the whole trip!

Shawn's first Trout. The first one was little, this one was at least 4 or 5 lbs! Put up a good fight too!

This big guy was along the shore with another large bear, the other took off into the bushes but this one was curious. It came right out onto the rock and watched us before wandering back into the forest. It was amazing to see it so close and feel so safe!

Last week our daughter and her friends experienced a tremendous & heart breaking loss. A friend of theirs died very suddenly and left a sea of broken hearts behind. I told my daughter that I would like to take her to Saskatoon for the funeral if she wanted to go, and of course she said yes. Three of her friends also wanted to pay their last respects to Lauren and her family and so we planned a day trip to go and say our final goodbyes.
The trip there was very subdued, I think the girls were unsure of what to expect and the emotions were building up to the moment when reality would set in. We enjoyed each others company, but there was a lingering sadness in the air. Goodbye is never easy. . . . .especially at such a tender age. We arrived early to find that there were already a lot of people there, and we paid our final respects to a wonderful young woman. The girls were very subdued but emotional during the service and my heart was breaking for everyone of them. We comforted each other as best as we could throughout the service and after wards.
After the service we made a couple of quick stops, washed the van, gassed up and grabbed a bite to eat. We saw a guy outside of Burger King with four or five dogs. He looked homeless, and the girls wanted to ask him if he was hungry. The girls in their day of grief could not help but want to reach out in kindness to someone who looked like they also could use some care and compassion. Turns out he wasn’t hungry, and I suspect from the conversation he also wasn’t homeless, he just enjoyed a carefree, hippie lifestyle:) I was impressed with the girls for their kindness. Compassion is an important thing in this life.
As we left the city I listened to the girls talking and that still quiet voice said to me “Pull over. . . . . let them play on the bridge. Mix some happiness with all that sadness. . . . .” As I was listening to the girls, they were talking about how some of them had never stood on a bridge before. So I asked them if they wanted to double back to the bridge and check it out. They were so excited. I took pictures of them as the ran excitedly across the bridge, and then more as they waved at semi trucks to make them honk their horns. My tiredness faded away as I watched how something so simple could bring such joy.
We had many adventures on our way home. We played on an old bridge, waved at the big rigs, stopped at Dairy Queen and acted a little crazy, ran in the snow, had a road trip fire drill (jump out of the vehicle and run around it at a red light), climbed the stairs to the lighthouse in Cochin, played with Glo sticks, saw a huge moose and some deer, and created some fun memories. . . . . fitting memories for a wonderful person who was full of life and love. Lauren lived in the moment, that much was clear at her services, and so as a tribute to Lauren, for this day, her day, we lived in the moment too.

Lauren, you will be missed but not forgotten, and always loved . . . . . until we see you again.

Well, we didn’t really trash the dress
But we got some images she would have NEVER gone for before the wedding! Trash the dress doesn’t mean destruction, it means adventure:) and adventure we had!
I had the privilege of shooting Collin & Mel’s wedding this past summer, and then this winter we decided to do a “Trash the Dress” session on horseback! Being the outdoorsy people they are we incorporated all of the things they love most:) We also took a few minutes to photograph Mel with her Dad to say “Thanks” for getting the horses saddled up and ready to go!
It was a beautiful day although a little chilly. Mel was a trooper going with bare arms in the mild winter breeze. She’s a tough cookie, and it was fun to shoot them together again. Thanks for having me out to the farm guys! Another great adventure to put on the books:)

Throughout the years we have developed a family tradition of Valentine’s day photo sessions. It all started with the idea of having personalized Valentines for each of the kids. Friends and family love them so much we have kept up the tradition year after year.
This year is bittersweet for me. My oldest daughter is almost a teenager and I’m not sure how much longer she’ll humor me with this tradition! But this year we had out most fun session ever complete with hair and makeup. I don’t think it’ll be too hard to convince her to do a photo session next year, but I don’t think Valentine’s will be on the table.
I am amazed at the beauty of my kids each time I photograph them. I feel so blessed to have the ability to capture them throughout their growing years! These are my favorite images of Tamzen to date:) My precious oldest daughter. I hope you enjoy these as much as we do!

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching!
This weekend I finally had time to do a photo shoot with my two youngest kids. We had SO much fun! Some photographers don’t like posting pictures of their own children, they feel like it is cheating somehow, but I disagree! I love photographing and sharing images of my precious little ones:) And since I am not permitted to post any images from any of the other sessions I have done lately this is a great time to post some of my own:)
I have some great specials coming up for Valentines Day! This is your last week to get in on them! Call or email me for details!
So without further ado, here are my latest pics of my youngest two!

It’s part of the JOY of Family
WIth each new life that joins the bloodline, your heart finds room for a deeper love than you knew existed! This weekend we had the privilege of meeting the newest addition to the family, baby Levi. He is a calm and easy baby, he fits in perfectly with his other two siblings! He is the spitting image of his big brother and obviously connected to his big sister, they all match:)
Clayton & Amy were so great to work with. We spent most of the day photographing, taking frequent breaks for feedings and comfort. I loved watching them interact with each other, they are very loving and considerate, and after 3 kids, still very much in love:) It does my heart good spending time with these much loved siblings of ours.
Initially I was going to do this sneak peek in color, as I hardly ever deviate from color (I heart it), but I saw a few of the images while editing and thought they would be great black & white images. When I started editing them I fell in love with the black & white conversions, and so here is my first all black & white sneak peek!! Enjoy:)
Thank You so much Clayton & Amy for inviting us to meet Levi and capture his first precious days of life! I feel so honored to have had the opportunity to photograph him and I can honestly say I have fallen in love with this sweet little man! We are so proud of you both and your beautiful little family.
